Hague Adoption Convention Courses

Agencies that provide adoption services are now required to be accredited per the Hague Convention.  Which basically means that there are now new criteria that all prospective adoptive parents must meet.  They require 10 hours of training with respect to International Adoption.

Tom and I are signed up for the following classes through Baker Victory (the NY agency that is overseeing our home study):

  • Conspicuous Families:  What to expect when adopting a child of a different race or ethnicity - 1.5 hrs - Complete
  • The Journey of Attachment:  What to look for, how to foster attachment, etc. - 2 hrs. - Complete
  • Let’s Talk Adoption:  How important it is to tell the child her adoption story - 2 hrs - Complete
  • Medical Issues In International Adoption:  What those issues may be, etc. - 2.5 hrs - Complete
  • With Eyes Wide Open:  An international adoption preparation guide - hours vary per agency requirement - Complete

11/25/07:  We spoke with our social worker about the Hague courses, so she can include it in the home study.  She says she’ll have a rough draft for us to review very shortly.

    Hi there,

    I just stumbled upon your blog tonight when googling info about NYS agencies and adoptions. It was neat to see another NY family going through the very same things we are… we are in Central NY. And we are rushing to finish the paperchase for our daughter, who’s a special needs child from China. I was laughing about your notary post cause we went through SO many of those same ridiculous challenges. Good luck with everything!

    Hi. Megan. I just visited your site. Looks like we’re at about the same stage. Are you a member of the adoption.com forum?

    the notary thing was something. I can’t believe what the doctor’s office put me through. I hope my home study gets here quickly, so I don’t have to renew any of my docs (or at least not that one).
